Adler receives new Ethnic and Gender Studies scholarship

The “Ethnic and Gender Studies Scholar-Activist Award” is a $1,000 scholarship that was presented to Sivan Adler from Albany, NY in December 11, 2024. Adler is a double major in Acting and Ethnic and Gender Studies and a transfer student from Hudson Valley Community College. She is an Honors student and is president of S.T.E.P.S. She also served that student group as Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) chair, in addition to her work with other campus organizations. She is planning a May 2026 graduation.

Ethnic & Gender Studies Scholar-Activism Award

Recognizes upper-level majors academic achievement and their dedication to social justice-related activism, on and/or off campus. Eligibility:

  • GPA 3.3 or above; for EGS majors only 
  • Record of activism on campus in a student or community organization that supports social justice initiatives
  • Nomination by faculty teaching in/affiliated with the program; nominations will be reviewed and endorsed by advisory board (ideally this will be a fall semester award)
  • Students must have at least junior standing (i.e., completed min. 60 credit hours)
  • Awarded at the beginning of the academic year (so seniors can use it during that year)
  • Renewable one time (so up to 2 years) 

Ethnic & Gender Studies Promise Award

  • All class levels are eligible starting with 2nd semester freshmen, and including grad students (e.g. students in a multi-award BA/MA program)
  • Students must be enrolled in an EGS-program minor or the major for at least one semester, and in good academic standing
  • Application process: submit a 2-pg statement indicating how the program is contributing to the student’s career plans together with a list of courses taken in the program (and other relevant coursework); a resume; at least one written recommendation from a faculty member/professional staff member who has worked with the student, preferably in a social-justice related class or organization. Send the package to the EGS program coordinator. Submissions due March 1.
  • Applications will be reviewed by the EGS advisory board; awarded in spring semester. 
  • This is a one time award
