The recent Days of Service at Fredonia was a resounding success, drawing more than 950 participants who supported over 20 local service agencies to make a difference in the community in the program that combines volunteer efforts and service-learning projects.
Among the wide range of community service projects undertaken were: raking leaves, painting, serving meals, registering blood donors, cleaning, collecting nonperishable food items for local food pantries, creating and providing social/recreational activities for youth and senior citizens.
“The event was a great success,” reports Joyce H. Smith, chair of Days of Service and coordinator of Volunteer and Community Services.
Days of Service began on Nov. 7 with the 11th annual Fall Sweep, a major initiative that saw more than 630 students – representing over 56 student groups – raking leaves and yard debris in more than 300 lawns in Fredonia.
In Operation Breakfast, the final activity held on Nov. 12, over 400 pounds of nonperishable breakfast food items were collected and donated to the Chautauqua County Rural Ministry’s Friendly Kitchen/Food Pantry to assist impoverished families in the immediate area. Supporting these efforts were Marie Scime, Volunteer and Community Service intern, along with the Volunteer Services Advisory Committee and Daniel A. Reed Library staff.
