The Psychology Club will host the eleventh annual ‘Out of the Darkness Walk’ on Saturday, March 28, benefiting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). Registration for the event will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the campus clock tower, on the corner of University Parkway and Symphony Circle. The three-mile walk will begin at noon.

According to AFSP, Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in Americans between the ages of 15 to 64, claiming more lives than war, murder, and natural disasters combined. The walk is a fundraising campaign intended to increase awareness of suicide prevention,

The walk is free and open to the community. Those interested can pre-register and donate online at supporting.afsp.org until March 27.

“Out of the Darkness” is sponsored by the Psychology Club, Psi Chi honor society, Pride Alliance, the Office of Volunteer and Community Services, Fredonia faculty and staff, and members of the community.

All proceeds will go directly to the AFSP, the leader in the fight against suicide. The organization funds research, creates educational programs, advocates for public policy, and supports survivors of suicide loss. It has 67 local chapters and events nationwide. The AFSP has set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20 percent by 2025.
