Fredonia students, faculty and community members are invited to participate in Wear Purple Day on Wednesday, Oct. 15 to show support for ending relationship and domestic violence. As part of the statewide Shine the Light on Domestic Violence campaign, Fredonia Student Counseling Services and the Employee Assistance Program is hosting a presentation at noon in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room.
Attendees will learn about relationship and domestic violence and how to recognize abusive actions. Ice cream will be served along with the presentation to all in attendance. The event is free and open to the public.
The New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence launched Shine the Light on Domestic Violence campaign seven years ago. Since then, over 500 organizations including other colleges, law enforcement agencies and municipal governments have taken action against domestic violence and adorned purple during the month of October.
In 2013, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo proclaimed the month of October to be Domestic Violence Awareness Month in New York State. New York is the only state in the nation to have an executive-level agency combating domestic violence and establishing education programs.
Wear Purple Day is sponsored by Fredonia’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, the Employee Assistance Program, Human Resources and the Student Counseling Center.
