SUNY Fredonia’s Public Speaking Competition will be taking place this year on Sunday, April 11 at 2 p.m. The annual event is coordinated and hosted by the Applied Communication Association and Public Relations Student Society of America.

All SUNY Fredonia students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend as audience members, but only students are allowed to compete in the competition. Registration is taking place on the ground floor of McEwen Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 29 through April 2. Only the first 30 students registered will be allowed to participate in the event. There will be a reception taking place during the competition with refreshments for all contestants and audience members.

The competition involves each contestant delivering a six-to-eight-minute speech in front of an audience and a panel of judges, comprised of eight professors from the Department of Communication, in McEwen Hall rooms 202 and 209. Speech topics, chosen by the contestants, must fall into the categories of persuasive or informative. The judges will grade each speech based on an oral presentation rubric to determine both the first and second place winners in each category. This year, a new category of winners will be chosen by the audience, with a popular vote in each category.

The first place winners in both categories will each receive a $200 cash prize and the second place winners in both categories will each receive a $100 cash prize. The winners of the audience popular vote in each category will receive Fredonia gift baskets.
