Nursing a 4-2 lead late in the game, the Fredonia bats exploded for seven runs in the sixth in in an 11-2 victory in Game 1 of a split with Staten Island. They dropped the nightcap, 3-2.
Sophomore Nick Ciraolo picked up the win, striking out eight of the nine batters he faced in three perfect innings of work.
Fredonia blew a close game open in the sixth inning. Brian Chatt delivered a bases-loaded single, followed by a two-run base hit by D.J. Schiersing. Chatt would steal home on a first-and-third-steal, and Trevor Bradshaw doubled in Schiersing. Nic Fiore ripped an RBI single, and Bradshaw scored the final run on a wild pitch.
Bradshaw, Fiore and Schiersing each had two hits. William Clifford and Schiersing drove in two runs each.
On the mound, Sam Cestra started for the Devils, going four innings before leaving the game with a 2-2 tie for a no decision. Cestra scattered five hits and walked one and struck out one.
In Game 2, Staten Island jumped put to a 3-0 lead, and Fredonia was never able to recover, dropping the contest 3-2. Nick Lawlor started the game for Fredonia, and gave up three runs over 4.2 innings pitched. Anthony Kinney came in relief of Lawlor, tossing 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Offensively, the Devils could only muster six hits in the contest. Nic Fiore and Brian Chatt each drove in a run.
The Blue Devils wrap up their trip to Myrtle Beach Sunday with a 10 a.m. contest vs. Manhattanville College.
