The Fredonia State women's basketball team completed a weekend sweep in the North Country, defeating Plattsburgh with a 56-42 win over the Cardinals on Sunday. Seniors Katie Pitcher and Lauren Mickley continued to be a formidable 1-2 punch for the Devils. Pitcher led all scorers with 15 points, and Mickley added 10 points and three assists.
Mackenna Nechwedowich added nine points and 10 rebounds, and Mary Culeton and Jaden Sciotti both grabbed seven boards.
With Plattsburgh leading 12-10 in the early going, Davis and Culeton hit back-to-back shots to give Fredonia State the lead they would keep the rest of the game.
The Devils would lead by as many as 10 points in the first half. With 2:03 left, Nechwedowich converted a layup to make it 33-23 in favor of the Devils. Plattsburgh scored the final five points of the half to make it a five-point game.
Plattsburgh pulled within two points in the third after Hope Sullivan nailed a three to open the second half. The Devils scored the next six points to take back control of the game, going up, 39-31.
The Devils ended the third up 44-36. They outscored Plattsburgh 12-6 in the fourth to secure the win.
The Devils defense held Plattsburgh to 25 percent shooting (15-61) from the floor, while converting 42 percent of theirs (21-50). Fredonia State held 38-36 edge in rebounding, both teams made a trio of threes, and the Devils went 11-16 from the line, with the Cards going 9-14.
Sullivan had 15 points for Plattsburgh, and Peyton Couture added 10 points. The Cardinals fall to 5-11 and 2-7 in the SUNYAC.
The Devils improve to 10-7 overall and 5-5 in the SUNYAC. Next up for the Devils is SUNY Buffalo State at home this Friday.
