The Fredonia women's basketball team kept its SUNYAC record perfect at 3-0 and ran its winning streak to five games with a 60-46 win over visiting Oswego. Similar to Friday's victory over Cortland, the Devils found themselves down at the half, only to use the third quarter to springboard to victory. They outscored the Lakers 16-2 in the third, with Oswego's only basket coming with four seconds left.
Jenna Einink (Westfield/Chautauqua Lake) led the Devils with 17 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Anna Chiacchia (Hamburg/Hamburg) added 11 points, and Katie Pitcher (Fulton/Hannibal) had 10. Sarah Sweazy (Rochester, N.Y./Rush Henrietta) collected a career-best 9 steals to go along with 7 points, and 2 blocked shots.
The game was back and forth over most of the first two quarters. With Fredonia up 26-22, the Lakers closed the half on a 13-4 run, which gave them a 35-30 lead at the break.
Oswego was aided by 5 of 8 shooting from three-point land and 52 percent shooting from the floor. The Devils struggled offensively in the second quarter, shooting just 4 of 18 (22 percent).
Chiacchia led all scorers with 9 points at the half.
Fredonia opened the third quarter with back-to-back baskets by Pitcher, and a free throw by Einink to tie the game at 35. They continued to roll offensively, scoring the next 11 points as well, six of them by Einink. Quincy Zimmerman broke the drought for the Lakers with a layup just inside the end of the third.
The Devils outscored Oswego 14-9 in the fourth for the win.
Rae White (North Collins/Lake Shore) added 5 assists, 6 rebounds, and 7 points for the Devils.
Oswego (1-7, 0-4 SUNYAC) was led by Raiven Encarnacion with 12 points and four steals.
The Devils (5-3, 3-0 SUNYAC) take a break to catch up on academics. They return to the court after finals on December 28 and 29 when they travel to Columbus, Ohio for the Capital College Christmas Tournament.
