Associate Professor Michael Igoe
To call attention to the importance of getting screened for colon cancer during March – Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month – Department of Communication Associate Professor Mike Igoe produced a public service announcement (PSA) that will air on MY TV Buffalo, Channel 49, at various times in March.
Mr. Igoe has a special interest in the subject since he is a 20-year survivor of colon cancer.
"When I turned 50 I went for a colonoscopy and that's when my cancer was discovered. Thanks to early detection, I'm alive today since my disease was caught in its preliminary stages," Igoe said.
In the spot, Igoe stresses the importance of how early detection saved his life. . .and might save that of others as well. Some of the visuals are pictures of things and activities Igoe has been able to do or pursue during the past 20 years as a result of his successful treatment, and that includes a photo of him spending time with the grandkids.
“The American Cancer Society has identified colon cancer as one of the five deadliest diseases,” Igoe noted. “That's why screening is so important. Unlike other cancers, there are usually no symptoms of the disease.”
Igoe wrote the PSA, and Jim Gibbons, former videographer in Fredonia’s Marketing and Communication office, was the videographer/editor. The public service spot has already aired on Fredonia’s student TV station WNYF during the game show, “Press Your Luck.”
