Conlan Keenan had a natural hat trick to lead No. 3 Geneseo over Fredonia State, 4-2, in SUNYAC men's hockey Saturday at Steele Hall. The Blue Devils' Jacob Haynes extended his point streak in the final second of the game and he and six teammates were honored prior to their final collegiate home game.
Keenan's three goals opened the scoring and gave him 20 on the season. It earned him the game's No. 1 star. Brendan Miller added a short-hander to make it 4-0 Geneseo before Ryan Dunner netted his eighth goal of the season at 17:13 of the second period when he batted down a rebound following a shot from the point by Jasper Korican-Barlay.
Haynes completed the scoring when he jammed in a loose puck just before the final buzzer. It was his 14th goal of the season and extended his points streak to 15 games. He also moved into a tie for 18th on Fredonia State's career scoring list with 95 points (40 goals, 55 assists) in 93 games.
Tommy Martyn picked up an assist on the goal by Haynes.
Anton Rosen made 44 saves in the Fredonia State net while Matt Petizian had 27 stops for the Blue Knights, who improved to 19-3-2 overall and 12-1-2 in the SUNYAC. They are guaranteed the No. 1 seed heading into the SUNYAC Tournament.
The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 6-10-7 overall and 3-8-3 in the conference. They remain one point out of the sixth and final playoff spot with two games remaining, both on the road, next Friday at Cortland and next Saturday at Oswego.
Prior to the game, seven Blue Devils were recognized prior to their final home game: seniors Haynes, Rosen, Tyler Riter, Charlie Manley, and Max Blitz, and juniors Martyn and Hugo Gamache, both of whom will graduate early. In addition, public address announcer George Tanti, a veteran of 25 seasons, was recognized. He has announced his retirement from his PA duties.
CAREER-LISTER: Haynes was credited with two short-handed goals Friday at Brockport, marking only the fourth two-shortie game in program history. Matt Zeman was the last to accomplish the feat on Jan. 11, 2005 vs. RIT. Jeff Lupu accomplished the feat twice during the 1993-94 season...The two shorties Friday give Haynes four this season, tied for third most in a season. Lupu had 10 during 1993-94.
