Fredonia State will mark in the 35th anniversary of National Girls & Women In Sports Day with four days of Instagram Live webcasts starting Feb.1.

Blue Devil head coaches and student-athletes from women's teams will be available for an hour each night to answer questions from middle school and high school girls who are considering attending college.

Those wishing to participate can watch live on Instagram, @fredbluedevils, each night. The starting time of each session will be announced closer to the start of the event.

The Fredonia State NGWSD schedule and topics for the four days are:

Mon., Feb. 1 – Mental Health

Tues., Feb. 2 – Recruiting

Wed., Feb. 3 – The Student-Athlete Experience

Thurs., Feb. 4 – Transitioning from High School to College

The first session, Mental Health, was chosen as part of a national initiative by the Women's Sports Foundation (the group that oversees NGWSD) to recognize the importance of staying mentally and physically healthy during challenging times.

Fredonia State teams, like most college and high school teams in the country, have been challenged to stay engaged in the classroom and in their sports despite the many changes brought on by the pandemic. This year's NGWSD presenters will be prepared to talk about the ways they've stayed mentally and physically fit during the past year.

The remaining three topics were chosen in keeping with Fredonia State's annual outreach during NGWSD. In past years, the women's basketball and women's volleyball teams met with area school girls to answer questions about college.  This year's virtual format allows more Fredonia State women's teams and more middle school and high school girls to participate.

The Instagram Live webcasts were inspired by the larger national NGWSD celebration, which will mark its 35th anniversary on Feb. 3. Every year since 1986, the celebration is designed to inspire girls and women to play and be active, and to realize their full power.
