Soccer team seniors and their families.
The Oneonta State Red Dragons (9-2-2, 5-1-1 SUNYAC) and rainy conditions were too much for the Fredonia State Men's Soccer Team (6-9-0, 1-6-0 SUNYAC) on Saturday afternoon. The matchup also served as the Blue Devils' Senior Day honoring the team's 10 seniors.
Before the game, Coach P.J. Gondek took time to recognize all seniors and their contributions to the men's soccer program. Gondek also honored assistant coach, Michael Wright, who was unable to be recognized last year due to a COVID-cancelled season.
The rainy conditions of the field created for messy play from both sides to start the game.
One of the Blue Devils' best chances came ten minutes into play. The home team played a ball towards the goal line from nearly 25 yards out. Kevin Loftus (Lancaster, N.Y.) was the closest to the play, but couldn't convert the opportunity.
The visitors took off from that point, Lucas Fecci scored in the 33rd and 41st minutes to give the Red Dragons a 2-0 advantage headed into the locker room.
The Blue Devils opened the second half with a great set piece opportunity. Jacob Gennaro (East Amherst, N.Y.) played the initial ball in and it was a great look on net. The sophomore sent a beautiful ball to the upper left corner, but Oneonta's keeper was there to make the play.
Oneonta continued to stay in control and added a third goal late in the stanza.
The ten seniors honored were: Jimmy Doran (Orchard Park), Ibra Doumbia (Harlem), Loftus, Patick Logsdon (Williamsville), Brandon Londos (Depew), Mateo May (Newfane), Domenic Monti (Lancaster, N.Y.), Imani Paluku (Lovain-la-Neuve, Belgium), Jackson Retzer (Bowmansville), and Sam Wagner (Williamsville).
Fredonia State concludes its season next weekend on the road at Brockport and Geneseo.
