Jonathan Lombardo, interim Lecturer of music (trombone) in the School of Music in 2023-2024, has been appointed to full-time status as a Lecturer.

“I am excited that a comprehensive national search led to Jonathan Lombardo accepting our offer to continue building Fredonia's renowned trombone studio," said School of Music Dean David Stringham. “Mr. Lombardo is a widely-respected performer and educator, whose long tenure with Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra is complemented by a variety of engagements around the world. My colleagues and I look forward to working with Professor Lombardo in this new role!"

Appointed an adjunct instructor in the School of Music in 2017, Lombardo has been principal trombone of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra since 2005. He has also performed with the Boston, Baltimore, Detroit, Chautauqua, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Rochester, San Antonio, Sarasota and Syracuse orchestras. He began playing trombone as a young student in San Antonio, TX, and went on to study in high school at Interlochen Arts Academy.

Lombardo received a Bachelor of Music degree from The Juilliard School, where he was a student of Joseph Alessi and Per Brevig. He also earned a master’s degree at the State University at Buffalo in Music Performance with an emphasis in Conducting.

As a soloist, Lombardo premiered Eric Ewazenʼs “Concerto for Three Trombones,” a work written for the Buffalo Philharmonic and its trombone section. He has also appeared as a guest soloist at the Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic, the American Trombone Workshop with the U.S. Army Orchestra, the Amherst Symphony, the World Youth Symphony Orchestra, as well as with the Juilliard Orchestra.

A dedicated educator, Lombardo has additionally served on the faculty at the State University at Buffalo and Interlochen Center for the Arts. He has given solo recitals and master classes around Europe, Central and South America and throughout the United States.
Lombardo can be heard on dozens of recordings with the Buffalo Philharmonic, most notably “Built for Buffalo,” where the Ewazen concerto can be heard. He also appears as a guest on “In Gabrieli’s Day” recorded by the American Brass Quintet, and various Fisher-Price soundtracks.

In his free time, Lombardo enjoys woodworking, cooking, and spending time with his wife, daughter, and two corgis.

Those who have not recently heard the Fredonia Trombone Choir, under the direction of Lombardo, recently, will have plenty of opportunities to hear the group this year. In addition to their performances on campus, the choir has been invited to perform at the New York State School Music Association conference and at a New York State Band Directors Association regional event this fall. A spring tour to Long Island, NY, is also planned.
