Six Fredonia State Blue Devils have been chosen for the SUNYAC Men's Swimming & Diving All-Decade Team. Five of them are springboard divers.
The All-Decade Team, voted on by conference Sports Information Directors, includes Arron Carlson, Adam Clouthier, Ryan Fuller, Christian Krasnek, Rafael Santiago and Christian Torres. Clouthier is the lone swimmer in the group.
The other five – Carlson, Fuller, Krasnek, Santiago, and Torres – were members of elite corps of Blue Devils whose success began under the tutelage of John Crawford. The former men's head coach and a member of the Fredonia State Athletics Hall of Fame, Crawford was an assistant coach for Head Coach Arthur Wang and was in charge of the diving program which – during his tenure and the years immediately after his retirement – produced numerous All Americans and 13 straight seasons with at least one Blue Devil at the NCAA Division III championship meet. That string included women's divers.
Here's is a capsule look at each of the six Blue Devil men on the All-Decade Team:
Arron Carlson: Four-time All-America and seven-time All-SUNYAC. Finished second in the 1-meter and fifth in the 3-meter his junior year at the 2016 NCAA meet for his first two All-America certificates. His third and fourth awards came his senior year when he was third in the 3-meter and fourth in the 1-meter at the 2017 NCAA meet. Won the 3-meter competition at the 2016 SUNYAC meet, his first of three conference titles. Doubled at 2017 meet with record scores of 549.30 off the 1-meter board and 594.40 off the 3-meter. The two wins earned him the SUNYAC Diver of the Meet honor. Was second off both boards as a sophomore, and second in the 3-meter as a freshman. Was the 2017 winner of the SUNYAC James Fulton Award, given to a male swimmer or diver based on athletic and academic excellence. Also received Scholar All-America distinction in 2017 from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. Named Fredonia State Male Athlete of the Year as a junior and a senior. Hailed from LeRoy, and Notre Dame High School in Batavia.
Adam Clouthier: Excelled in the breaststroke, winning three 200-yard and two 100-meter SUNYAC titles. Won his first of five crowns as a freshman in the 200-yard race, won both the 100 and the 200 as a sophomore, then doubled again as a senior. He also fashioned a third in the 100 as a freshman and a third in the 200 as a junior. He broke two conference records at the 2017 meet, including an NCAA B-Cut time of 56.31 seconds in the 100-yard breaststroke. His 200-breaststroke time was 2:04.06. Graduated from Fairport High School before relocating to Conroe, Texas.
Ryan Fuller: Earned All-America and Honorable Mention All-America certificates, two SUNYAC Diver of the Meet awards, and four SUNYAC springboard diving titles. Put his name among conference contenders with fourth-place finishes off both boards as a sophomore at the 2011 meet. Doubled as SUNYAC champ the following two years, with wins off the 1-meter and 3-meter boards in 2012 and 2013. Named SUNYAC Diver of the Meet both times. Added an NCAA zone diving win in 2012 before moving on to finished sixth in the 3-meter and 10th in the 1-meter at nationals, resulting in the two All-America awards. Set several school records before graduating and returning to serve as the Blue Devil diving coach upon Crawford's retirement. Fuller hailed from Endicott, and graduated from Union-Endicott High School.
Christian Krasnek: 2018 Honorable Mention All-America in 3-meter springboard diving after finishing second off both boards at the SUNYAC meet. Followed that by winning the 2019 SUNYAC 3-meter title and finishing second in the 1-meter, 3.5 points out of first place. His one first and one second earned him the 2019 SUNYAC Male Diver of the Meet award. Hailed from Springville, where he attended Springville-Griffith Institute High School.
Rafael Santiago: Two-time Honorable Mention All-America as a senior and three-time All SUNYAC with four second-place finishes at conference meets. Finished ninth in the 1-meter and 15th in the 3-meter at the 2016 NCAA meet. Was a national alternate each of his first three seasons before punching his ticket to the NCAA meet with a second-place finish in the 1-meter at the zone meet. His second-place finishes at SUNYAC meets were behind fellow Blue Devils. Hailed from Middletown, N.Y., and Middletown High School.
Christian Torres: Having to endure a film review (in the pre-zone meet era) in order to make nationals, Torres was a national alternate as a junior before making nationals his senior year. He showed he belonged by finishing sixth off the 3-meter springboard and ninth in the 1-meter at the 2010 NCAA meet, when he became just the second Fredonia State men's diver on the national deck. Those finishes earned him All-America and Honorable Mention All-America status, respectively. He also won the 2010 SUNYAC 1-meter crown and was selected Male Co-Diver of the Meet that year. He was a SUNYAC second-place finisher as a junior. Hailed from Dunkirk, and Dunkirk High School, and is the current diving coach at Cornell University.
