The Fredonia State women's tennis team wrapped up its 2024-2025 season on a high note Saturday afternoon, edging out a 5-4 victory over SUNY Brockport at the Salmon Creek Country Club.
Despite falling short in both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles as well as No. 3 and No. 6 singles, the Devils battled back with clutch performances down the stretch in singles competition to secure the victory.
Leading the charge for the Devils was senior Bernadette Gens, who closed out her collegiate career in dominant fashion at No. 1 singles. She defeated Brockport's Olivia Raschiatore 6-1, reflecting on her daughter's final collegiate match, Head Coach Jane Gens shared, "It was nice to see Bernadette wrap up her senior year and last match with a great win."
Lucy Prevet also came through in a tough No. 2 singles match, winning 6-4, 6-3. " Lucy dug out a very tough match as well," Coach Gens said. "But Sophia Olson was the hero of the day as she played the deciding match." With the match knotted at 4-4, it was Sophia Olson at No. 5 singles who sealed the win for the Devils. Olson took down Grace Trebilcock 7-5, 6-3. "She won in two sets using great judgment on shots and using a drop shot she learned just two months ago yielding about 10 points," Coach Gens noted.
Also contributing a key point was Claire LeFevre, who made quick work of her opponent at No. 4 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
Reflecting on the season as a whole, Gens added, "I couldn't be anymore more proud of team than I am with this one! It was a great experience this year being their coach." With the win, Fredonia State finishes its campaign at 6-9 overall.
