Professor Ivani Vassoler discussed geoeconomics challenges and the cracks in the globalization process at the International Studies Association’s annual convention.

The case of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), a bloc trying to shape the world economy governance process through more assertive voices of less developed countries – the Global South – was raised by Dr. Vassoler. She gave remarks at the association’s 66th annual convention held March 2 and 3 in Chicago, IL.

Representing economies with consumer potential, large populations, natural resources and a flourishing industrial base, the BRIC contingent seeks to spur cooperation between developed countries and countries of the Global South, and has recently added new members, including Indonesia and Egypt, who are all committed to multilateralism.

Dr. Vassoler, of the Department of Politics and International Affairs, pondered, can BRICS lift the Global South boats while swimming against the tide and navigating the rough waters of the global economy?

Other speakers at the conference, whose theme was “Reconnecting International Studies,” were Dr. Anna Wrobel (Poland), Dr. Lyubov Mincheva (Bulgaria) and Dr. Karina Jedrzejowska (Poland).
