The Fredonia State Volleyball Team (10-8, 6-1 SUNYAC) won in straight sets for the second day this weekend. The win against New Paltz (9-9, 4-1 SUNYAC) came in the fashion of 25-18, 25-15, and 26-24 set scores.
The Blue Devils controlled the first two sets combining for 19 kills and a .236 hitting percentage. Defense held the visitors to 14 kills and a -.006 hitting percentage.
Fredonia State started the third set hot again and looked to be finishing as they started. The home team was up 6-1 forcing New Paltz to call a timeout. From there, the Hawks came out swinging.
The two teams exchanged points evening the score at 11s, 12s, 13s, 14s, and 15s. At 15-all, New Paltz went on a 7-2 run to make it 22-17.
The home team dug in to get as close as 24-21 and made a few key plays to get back in contention. The first came when Olivia Emley (Olean) dove to dig the ball and ended up returning it over the net. New Paltz was unable to return the attempt, making the score 24-22.
Two plays later, the Blue Devils and Hawks engaged in a lengthy rally that ended with a Selena Brown (Queens) block to make it 24-24.
Following an attacking error from New Paltz that made it 25-24 in Fredonia's favor, Christie Ackendorf (Amherst, N.Y.) hit the game-winning kill.
Emily Jones (Planfield, Ill.) led the team in kills with 12 on a .214 hitting percentage. Ackendorf finished with seven kills, along with another impressive hitting percentage of .350.
Brown got involved on both sides of the net, finishing with three kills on four attempts, hitting .750. Defensively she added four total blocks and three digs.
Sierra Keim (Singlehouse, Pa.) anchored the defense with 18 digs.
Fredonia State will return to action next weekend when they close out conference play against Geneseo and Brockport.
