SUNY Fredonia students Cassidy Hahn and Sara Stark have received an award for presenting their work at the recent Great Lakes Day in Albany.
While there, the two discussed their research work with Assemblyman William Parment and officials with the Departmental of Environmental Conservation.
They also presented posters of their research in the lobby of the legislative building (now in display in Jewett Hall, first floor).
Their visit was coordinated by the Great Lakes Research Consortium
Ms Hahn, a graduate student in Biology, has done a research project on the genetic diversity of the bass populations in Lake Erie. Bass are an important game fish and Lake Erie is a popular destination for bass fishermen. She works in the laboratory of Dr. Timothy Strakosh.
Ms. Stark, an undergraduate Molecular Genetics major, discussed her work on the study of beach closings in Dunkirk, NY. She has used genetic approaches to work to identify the sources of E. coli bacteria in the beach waters. Ms. Stark's research was done in Dr. Ted Lee's laboratory.
