The theme for Fredonia’s Black History Month observance is “Black: One Race, Many Traditions,” and is dedicated to spreading knowledge about African American culture, influence and history on campus. Events organized by students in the Black Student Union include:
- Sunday, Jan. 29, 7-10 p.m. - “Coming to America” Opening Ceremony, Williams Center Multipurpose Room (tickets sold out)
- Monday, Jan. 30 to Tuesday, Feb. 28 - “Memory Lane” display next to the McEwen Hall café
- Wednesday, Feb. 1, 7 p.m. – A visit by anti-police brutality activist and motivational speaker Leon Ford, McEwen Hall Room 202. Free.
- Tuesday, Feb. 7, 7 p.m. – “Still I Rise,” a platform for students and members of the community to discuss discrimination and racism; McEwen Hall Room 202. Free.
- Tuesday, Feb. 14, 7 p.m. – African Dance Company, Williams Center Multipurpose Room
- Thursday, Feb. 16, 7 p.m. – Open Mic Night/Poetry Slam with B2B, Fenton Hall Room 105. Entrance fee $3.
- Monday, Feb. 20, 7 p.m. – “Black and Brown All Around,” an event co-sponsored with Latinos Unidos, African Student Union and the Caribbean Student Organization, with performances and food from each culture; Williams Center Multipurpose Room. Ticketed event.
- Wednesday, Feb. 22, 7 p.m. – Lecture by anti-racism activist Jane Elliott, best known for her “Blue Eyes/Brown Eyes” exercise. Location TBA.
- Sunday, Feb. 26, 7 p.m. – “Unity Dinner” Closing Ceremony, Williams Center Multipurpose Room. Ticketed event.
