Final series to be played in Steele this weekend
The old home will soon be the new home for the Fredonia Blue Devil basketball teams.
Director of Athletics Jerry Fisk announced today that after this weekend's Potsdam/Plattsburgh series, all remaining home basketball games this season -- with the possible exception of the Buffalo State games -- will be played in Dods Hall.
After this weekend, remaining home doubleheaders this season are Jan. 13 vs. Geneseo, Jan. 30 vs. Brockport, Feb. 2 vs. Oneonta, Feb. 3 vs. New Paltz, and the Feb. 17 date with Buffalo State, which still might be played in Steele Hall. An announcement will be made in the weeks ahead.
"We are excited," Fisk said, "to play our home games in Dods Gymnasium. It's a great venue and will provide a lively atmosphere and home court advantage for Blue Devil teams."
Dods Hall was the Blue Devils' home court from the early 1960's to 1985, prior to the construction of the Steele Hall Fieldhouse. Games were moved to the fieldhouse at the start of the 1985-86 season and have been played there ever since, except for an occasional return to Dods when students were away during semester break.
Dods Hall, which will remain the home of Fredonia women's volleyball, was also the site of numerous concerts by national recording artists as well as the training camp home of the Buffalo Braves of the National Basketball Association for two seasons during the early 1970s.
Prior to the Blue Devils move to Dods, home games were played at off-campus facilities in Fredonia.
The Devils are slated to take on the Potsdam women at 5:30 p.m. and the men at 7:30 on Friday evening in Steele Hall. What may prove to be the last game in Steele, the teams play host to Plattsburgh at 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturday.
