Fredonia seniors Damone Brown (Haverstraw/North Rockland) and Justyn Haines (Albion/Albion) were second-place finishers Saturday at the Carnegie Mellon Spire Institute Division III Invitational. Each was worth eight team points toward Fredonia's eighth-place finish.

Brown, a thrower, was second in the shot put with a toss of 14.47 meters (47 feet, 5 3/4 inches) in a field of 50 men. He also earned two points for finishing seventh out of 46 in the 35-pound weight throw -- 13.96 meters (45 feet, 9 3/4 inches).

Haines cleared 4.58 meters (15 feet, one-quarter inch) in the pole vault. The event drew 25 vaulters.

Dan Sudyn (West Seneca/West Seneca West) scored points in two field events. A freshman, Sudyn was sixth in the long jump, good for three points, at 6.18 meters (20 feet, 3 1/2 inches). He was also eighth in the triple jump -- 12.44 meters (40 feet, 9 3/4 inches -- to earn one more point. He was joined in the triple jump by fellow freshman Jonah McGrath (Penfield/Penfield), who finished fifth -- and earned four points -- with a jump of 12.71 meters (41 feet, 8 1/2 inches).

The Blue Devils also earned two team points in the high jump as junior Nick Serafin (Depew/Depew) cleared 1.81 meters (5 feet, 11 1/4 inches) to finish in a tie for sixth.

Fredonia's only scoring in running events was a third-place finish in the distance medley relay. The quartet consisted of senior Merlin Joseph Jr. (Binghamton/Binghamton), freshman Michael Salvati (Avon/Avon), senior Mitch Loiacano (Lockport/Lockport), and junior Ethan Francis (Dunkirk/Dunkirk).
