The red carpet -- lined with tours, delicious food and live performances -- will be rolled out during Family Weekend, Sept. 28 to 30, when SUNY Fredonia welcomes parents and family members of its more than 5,000 students to campus.
“Family Weekend is a tradition at SUNY Fredonia, and a great time to re-connect students with their loved ones after the busy first month of the semester. There are activities for people of all ages, and we encourage families to visit on this special weekend.”
Registration will be held Friday, 3 to 7 p.m., at the Williams Center. Festivities begin with a buffet with hot hors d’oeuvres and other light fare at the Williams Center, 5 to 7 p.m. The bookstore hosts an open house, 3 to 5 p.m. The women’s tennis team will host SUNY Cortland, beginning at 4 p.m. Tim Young, an award-winning comedian and college circuit veteran, will perform at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House at 8 p.m. Prepaid show tickets can be picked up at the Williams Center.
Other Friday evening attractions include the screening of a classic movie, “Happy Feet,” for families with younger children at the Williams Center at 8 p.m. and ice skating at Steele Hall. There is no admission charge for the film, but tickets are required. The evening will be capped with conversation, refreshments and student entertainment at the lower level of the Williams Center.
Saturday’s full schedule begins at 9 a.m. with registration at the Williams Center, along with coffee and pastries served at the Campus Grind. The Scholars Breakfast, an invitation-only gathering sponsored by the Fredonia College Foundation to recognize scholarship recipients and their benefactors, will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Williams Center.
The women’s soccer team hosts SUNYIT at 1 p.m. at the new University Stadium. Special store hours, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., will be observed at the bookstore. Alpha Lambda Delta will stage its induction ceremony, by invitation, at the Williams Center from 2 to 3 p.m. “Prism” will give a free concert at 4 p.m. at King Concert Hall. “French One-Act Plays,” also free, will be staged at 8 p.m. at Diers Recital Hall in Mason Hall.
Off-campus attractions include visits to Merritt Estate Winery and Woodbury Vineyards, where tours and tastings will be offered from 1 to 3 p.m., and to Cross Roads Craft Market, 1 to 4 p.m. Transportation will be available to the destinations. Horizons boat cruises, offered at no fee, will be available (weather permitting) from 1 to 3 p.m. Signups for off-campus attractions can be placed at the registration table.
On Sunday, a traveler’s breakfast will be served from 9 to 11 a.m. at Erie Dining Center. The bookstore will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Family Weekend is sponsored by the Office of Campus Life, in conjunction with the Faculty Student Association, the Department of Theatre and Dance, and Spectrum Entertainment Board.
