Guerrillas
SUNY Fredonia’s all-male a cappella group, The Guerrillas, will compete this Wed., Aug. 3 at 9 p.m. on the Gospel Music Channel for a $10,000 cash prize. Help out your "fellow" Fredonians!

The SUNY Fredonia all-male a cappella group, "The Guerrillas," has been chosen to compete in a nationally televised singing contest this Wednesday, Aug. 3 at 9 p.m. -- and they need your help!

The new series called, "America Sings," will air on the Gospel Music Channel (GMC). It features thousands of hopefuls from a variety of musical genres that will highlight North America’s most talented singing groups and the communities they are from.

"We need everyone to go vote for the show after it airs," said SUNY Fredonia senior Tony Scardace, a music business major from Lindenhurst, N.Y., and the group's music director. "They can vote up to 50 times on the same IP address! We need all the help we can get so that, hopefully, we can be in the finale and win the $10,000 first-place prize!"

The show can be viewed in Fredonia and Jamestown on Channel 120, and in Erie County (N.Y.), Dunkirk and Westfield on Channel 135.

The eight-week long show began in June and is hosted by Drew Lachey, a member of the 1990s pop music sensation 98 Degrees and a former “Dancing with the Stars” winner.

GMC producers sought out The Guerrillas after viewing their performances on YouTube. The group was asked to record two new songs to be featured on the show: Kanye West’s “Heartless,” and “Walk the Dinosaur,” from the 1980s one-hit-wonder, Was Not Was. Video and audio for both songs were recorded on campus in Rosch Recital Hall earlier this semester.

The footage was sent out to Los Angeles, where it will be edited for the actual episodes.

“When [GMC] received our group’s footage, they said it was the most professional media they had received among all of the other groups on the show,” Scardace said.

Still, Scardace knows it all comes down to the group’s performance quality and their ability to generate votes. He hopes his fellow students and Fredonia's faculty, staff and community members will lend their support and vote early and often.

Viewers can vote at the GMC website. To learn more, contact Mr. Scardace at (613) 466-6998.
