Arron Carlson swept both diving events and provisionally qualified for the zone meet as the Fredonia men's swimming and diving team opened its 2016-17 season playing host to Niagara University.
Carlson took the 3-meter board by a score of 295.35, while Jake Storms finished third with a 239.10. Carlson also took the 1-meter board with a 305.70.
The only other Blue Devil to claim a first against the Division I Purple Eagles was Jake Favret who won the 100-yard breast stroke in a time of 1:00.36. He also finished second in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.07.
Fredonia claimed three other individual seconds: Bill Bradley (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) in the 100-yard butterfly in 54.90; Graham Jones in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:14.13; and Troy Lubanski in the backstroke in a time of 56.04.
The 200 medley relay team finished second in 1:39.30, just 0.65 seconds off the winning pace. Lubanski, Favret, Bradley and Pat Woods made up the quartet.
The 200 free relay team also finished second in 1:31.17. Liam Jones, Graham Jones, Woods and Bradley competed in that race.
Niagara claimed the team victory, 139-99.
The team is off until Saturday, Oct. 22 when they play host to Ithaca College.
