Sarah Rose Chamberlain has been named the recipient of the 2017 Lanford Presidential Prize from the Oscar and Esther Lanford Endowment in the Fredonia College Foundation. The award will be presented at Fredonia’s Commencement on Saturday, May 13 during the 10 a.m. ceremony.

The award, generously created and endowed by the late President Emeritus Oscar E. Lanford and Mrs. Lanford through the foundation, recognizes a member of the graduating class who has exhibited balanced achievement and exemplifies Fredonia’s ideals.
Ms. Chamberlain, from Grand Island, is completing a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Applied Mathematics with a concentration in Physics, as well as majors in Physics with a concentration in Theoretical, and in Mathematics. Her leadership and campus and community activities are extensive, including serving as president of the Engineering and Physics Society, vice president of the Math Club, a tutor in the Learning Center, an instructor in the Aerobic Center, and a participant in the Fredonia Fall Sweep and the Mini Maker Faire. She is a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society, Sigma Pi Sigma honor society in physics and Pi Mu Epsilon national honor society in mathematics, and participated in Fredonia’s Honors Program.
Chamberlain has received many other honors and awards, including the Presidential Math and Science Scholarship and the Robert E. Maytum Scholarship. She attended several undergraduate conferences in physics and has participated in the Student Research and Creativity and Exposition at Fredonia, promoting research she completed with Dr. Justin Conroy and Dr. Erica Simoson of the Department of Physics.
After graduation, Chamberlain will be attending Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo as a participant in its Cellular and Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry Ph.D. program. She was also awarded a Roswell Park Divisional Fellowship.
