The Cinema Alternatives student group at Fredonia is co-sponsoring a screening of the film “1984” as part of a nation-wide event. The film will be shown at the Hallwall’s Contemporary Arts Center in Buffalo on Tuesday April 4 at 7:30 p.m.
Cinema Alternatives’ focus is to promote the cinema arts around campus and the surrounding community with a focus on film and video that doesn’t traditionally follow the mainstream Hollywood narrative format. Over 180 art house movie theatres across the country in 165 cities and 43 states, including five locations in Canada and one in England, will be participating in a national event day screening of the infamous 1980s film 1984 starring John Hurt, who passed away earlier this year.
The event will provide a chance for communities around the country to show their unity and have their voices heard, as they hope ‘Big Brother’ will be listening. The date of screening the film was chosen because it is the day George Orwell’s protagonist, Winston Smith, begins rebelling against his oppressive government by keeping a forbidden diary. Theatre owners and organization strongly believe in supporting the National Endowment for the Arts, and participating theaters who charge admission for the screening of “1984” will be donating a portion of the proceeds to non-profit organizations of their choice tasked with protecting civil liberties and defending democracy.
The event is open to anyone who is interested in preserving the arts and supporting a good cause. For more information on the event, please visit online.
