Fredonia senior Adam Clouthier (Conroe, Texas) set a new school and conference school record in the 100-yard breaststroke during Friday morning at the 2017 SUNYAC Swimming & Diving championships meet.
Clouthier qualified first with a time of 56.70 seconds, a new record by three-hundredths of one second, then came back during the Friday night session and finished what he started. He won the event in a time of 56.31 seconds, an NCAA Division III B-Cut qualifier.
Fredonia sophomore Jake Favret (Watertown) finished second in 57.06 seconds after earning the No. 2 seed during preliminaries. Favret's seed time was 57.31 seconds. In addition, senior Liam Jones (Buffalo, N.Y.) tied for 10th in 1:01.85 as part of Friday's consolation final. The Blue Devils earned 43.5 team points in the event. They finished the day third of nine teams.
Clouthier's record preliminary time bested the previous conference record by three-hundredths of one second. It was set by the late Jack Jakubek of Cortland in 2014. Also, the school record that Clouthier broke was his own -- a 57.18 clocking in 2015.
In other swimming events Friday:
Graham Jones (Tonawanda) made the final of the 200 freestyle with a preliminary time of 1:44.85. He finished sixth overall in 1:44.98. Ben Chatley (Sanborn) advanced to the consolation round at 1:48.47 and finished 15th.
Troy Lubanski (Leicester) and Bill Bradley (Dunkirk), both came in 52.87 seconds to qualify for the consolation final in the 100 butterfly. In the final, Bradley finished 11th in 52.76 seconds while Lubanski was 12th in 52.79.
Jonah Adeson (Queensbury) advanced to the consolation final of the 400 individual medley, in which he finished 16th.
Two Fredonians swam in the consolation final of the 100 backstroke. Patrick Woods (Hamburg, N.Y.) finished 12th and Nathan Link (Grand Island) 15th.The quartet of Graham Jones, Chatley, Link, and Liam Jones finished third in the 800 freestyle relay in 7:08.47, Fredonia missed a chance to add to its point total when it was disqualified in the 200-yard medley relay after touching out second.
With 305.5 points, the Blue Devils trail Geneseo and New Paltz and are just ahead of Cortland in the team standings.
