SUNY Fredonia’s College of Education will hold its third annual Research Symposium on Saturday, April 2. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in W101 Thompson Hall. It is free and open to the public. This year’s theme is “Creativity through Collaboration.”

The annual research symposium provides an opportunity to professional educators of all levels from across Western New York as well as undergraduate and graduate students to collaborate in reporting research in their field of study. It also affords educated professionals an opportunity to hear about research being done by SUNY Fredonia students and faculty. Members of the College of Education have the opportunity to share ideas about important educational topics and engage in interesting dialogue about educational research and research projects.

This year’s keynote speaker is the director of the National Evaluation and Technical Assistance Center, Simon Gonsoulin. With more than 30 years of experience, Mr. Gonsoulin is an expert on issues related to education, special education and juvenile justice administration. Most recently he has acted as the deputy secretary of the Office of Youth Development within the governor’s cabinet in Louisiana. He served as the lead administrator for the state’s juvenile justice system, including its secure care facilities, statewide probation and parole functions, and contracted community-based programming. Prior to that, he served as the State director of Education for the same office. Mr. Gonsoulin also has worked directly in schools and classrooms as both an instructor and principal.

The symposium will include topics including, but not limited to, teaching-learning projects from field-based courses, faculty research related to school improvement, and graduate thesis projects related to improvement of student achievement. To learn more, contact Dr. Carrie Fitzgerald, assistant professor in the College of Education, at 716-673-4652 or Carrie.Fitzgerald@fredonia.edu.

The event is sponsored by SUNY Fredonia’s College of Education, SUNY Fredonia's Teacher Education Club, and Chautauqua Tapestry, a network of support services focused on meeting the needs of youth with emotional and behavioral challenges.
