In an effort to raise money for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event hosted by SUNY Fredonia on Saturday, April 24, the university’s chapters of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and the Applied Communication Association (A.C.A.) are hosting a “birthday celebration” fundraiser, taking place now until Apr. 23.
All students can sign up to have balloons and a card sent to an on- or off-campus friend on their birthday. Members of PRSSA and A.C.A. will deliver the gifts on the date specified by the sender. Students may order these at the SUNY Fredonia Central Ticket Office, located in the Williams Center. Balloons cost $5 and cards cost $2. Cash, checks, credit cards and Fredonia debit cards will be accepted.
“The fundraiser is for a great cause that almost every member of the campus can relate to,” said Emily Bird, President of PRSSA. “A.C.A. and PRSSA just want to do their part! The idea was sparked by the theme of the Relay this year, ‘celebrate more birthdays.’ PRSSA’s advisor, Ann Carden, suggested the idea after her daughter had successfully done it at another school.”
All proceeds will go toward SUNY Fredonia’s Relay for Life event, to be held Saturday, Apr. 24 in the Steele Hall Fieldhouse from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning.
The American Cancer Society Relay for Life program is designed to create life-changing events that give communities the chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled and survived cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight to find a cure for the disease. At SUNY Fredonia’s event, teams of people camp out in Steele Hall and take turns walking or running around the track. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the 12-hour-long event. Because cancer never sleeps, the relays are overnight events, with some taking up to 24 hours.
