With temperatures dropping and leaves falling, student organizations are invited to join together once again for the 10th annual Fall Sweep on Sunday, Nov. 9 from 9 a.m. until about noon, beginning in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room and extending to the local community.
The event is a community service opportunity in which Fredonia students go to residential streets surrounding the campus to rake leaves, allowing them to engage with the local citizens, with the goal of building a rapport between the university and the Village of Fredonia.
A 9 a.m. ceremony will feature remarks given by Fredonia President Virginia Horvath and Fredonia Mayor Steve Keefe before student volunteers disperse throughout the community. Together, President Horvath and Mayor Keefe will cut a cake celebrating the event’s 10th anniversary. Along with cake, ceremony attendees will also enjoy breakfast, provided by the Faculty Student Association, as well as performances by student a cappella group, Premium Blend.
In the weeks preceding the event, fliers will be distributed to local residences that are eligible to be raked during the sweep. Those who would like their lawn raked must simply post the flier visibly on their front doors the morning of the event.
Hosted by the student-run Applied Communication Association and co-hosted by the Public Relations Student Society of America Fredonia Chapter, Fall Sweep is being held in conjunction with Days of Service, a weeklong event that combines volunteer efforts and service-learning projects at various locations throughout the local community.
