When is a tie more like a win? When a team is struggling to get traction, which has been the case this season for Fredonia men's soccer.
The Blue Devils entered play Saturday looking for any kind of momentum to their season -- and they may have gotten a measure of it in a 0-0 tie with the host Brockport Golden Eagles.
Fredonia owned a 20-15 advantage in shots, including 10-8 in shots on goal. Blue Devil junior Austin Santor (Chazy) made all the stops as did Brockport goalkeeper Casey Sullivan, including several of the difficult variety.
Santor also had a key save. Brockport was awarded a free kick inside the final minute from about 30 yards out. Santor leapt and snagged the hard shot before any Golden Eagles could soar at it for a header.
Ryan Keller (East Aurora), Myles Taylor (Williamsville), and Parker Healy (East Aurora) had four shots each for Fredonia. Three of Keller's shots were on goal.
"I'm so proud of our guys today," Fredonia coach P.J. Gondek said after the tie. "We were the better team and had the best three chances. This tie seems like a small victory...we really needed it."
The end result was an 0-1-1 SUNYAC weekend for the Blue Devils during their Rochester-area swing. They stay in SUNYAC mode next Saturday afternoon when Buffalo State visits University Stadium.
Brockport ended the day at 0-2-2 in the SUNYAC and 5-1-2 overall.
