The New York State Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Association has bestowed its Lifetime Achievement Award upon Ann Deakin, associate professor and coordinator of Interdisciplinary Studies in GIS at Fredonia, in recognition of her many contributions to the GIS profession. The award was presented to Dr. Deakin at the New York State Geospatial Summit held on Oct. 21 at Welch Allyn Lodge, Skaneateles.
In the award citation, the association praised Deakin for her passion for GIS that, for nearly 20 years, has given countless Fredonia students an unparalleled experience. “Her willingness to go above and beyond the traditional classroom environment and give her students real-life experiences has produced a generation of GIS professionals both here in New York and across the country,” the citation stated.
The Fredonia GIS alumni page is filled with testimony of Deakin’s impact on her students who go on to become well-rounded geospatial professionals as well as innovators.
Deakin has served on the association’s board of directors, has chaired its educational committee and has also represented the academic sector on the New York State Geospatial Advisory Council in Albany.
