Dr. Ziya Arnavut, professor of computer and information sciences, co-chaired the conference as well as the organizing committee for the Fifth International Conference on Soft Computing, Computing with Words and Perceptions in System Analysis, Decision and Control, held Sept. 2-4 in Famagusta, Cyprus.

The conference was technically sponsored by the Institute of Electric and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and International Fuzzy Systems Association (IFSA).

More than 130 papers were submitted to the conference from 25 different countries, of which 82 were accepted for presentation and publication and about 200 people attended the conference.

The conference had nine invited speakers on Fuzzy Logic, Signal Processing and High Performance Computing. Dr. Majid Rabbani (Kodak Research), Prof. Nasir Memon (NYU), Dr. Stephen Lathrop (National Center for High Performance Computing), and Prof. Mo Jamshidi (University of Texas at San Antonia) were the invited speakers from the USA.
