Department of Physics Assistant Professor Michael M. Dunham co-authored a study on the formation of multiple star systems that was recently accepted for publication by “Nature,” the premier journal in natural science disciplines.
The study reports the detection of the birth of a new triple system, including unambiguous evidence supporting one particular hypothesis for how multiple systems form. The result shows that this method of multiple stellar system formation operates in at least some systems, and paves the way forward for future studies on this topic.
The detection image from the publication was recently focused on NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day website. There's also a link to the publication.
