Fredonia women had noteworthy performances in four field events Friday at the Youngstown State Icebreaker, the first indoor track and field meet of the 2017-18 season.

Blue Devil senior Sarah Couperus (Marion, N.Y.) cleared 1.55 meters (5 feet, 1 inch) in the high jump, same as five other women -- including two from Cleveland State and one each from Robert Morris and from Duquesne, all NCAA Division III programs. They finished in a tie for fourth place in a field of 23 women.

Couperus also finished 12th in a field of 23 in the triple jump with a distance of 10.39 meters (34 feet, 1 1/4 inch).

In the pole vault, senior Kristen Sawyer (Lockport) cleared 3.40 meters (11 feet, 1 3/4 inches) to finish tied four fourth, while senior Naji McCallar (Buffalo) threw a personal-best 11.48 meters (37 feet, 8 inches) in the shot put, good for 11th place out of 45 throwers.

Junior thrower Abriel Andrews (Syracuse) had Fredonia's other personal-best by a women other than a first-time freshmen or event newcomers with a toss of 12.34 meters (40 feet, 6 inches) in the 20-pound weight throw. She was 20th in a field of 33.

It was the first collegiate meet for nine Blue Devil freshmen, plus one sophomore, many of whom to compete again next Friday and Saturday at the Kent State Golden Flash Gala.
