The New York State Board of Regents has named two representatives from Fredonia to the New York State Blue Ribbon Commission on the Arts that will develop recommendations for an arts assessment pathway that could become part of Regents examinations.

Alberto Rey, SUNY Distinguished Professor of Visual Arts and New Media, will become one of 17 members of the executive committee of the arts advisory commission. Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts Ralph Blasting will be a member of the commission.
Established in 2014 by the Board of Regents, the commission is addressing the establishment of an arts assessment that could be taken by students in place of one of the Regents examinations now required for high school graduation throughout the state. A potential arts graduation pathway would include a course of study in the arts and a rigorous Regents-caliber arts skill assessment.
Currently, students interested in the arts must pass all five Regents exams and complete a five-unit course of study in the arts to earn a Regents Diploma with advanced designation in the arts.
The commission, which will present its findings to the commissioner of education this fall, will also examine how other states provide pathways to graduation in the arts and evaluate assessments currently being used to measure student achievement in the arts.
Members of the commission represent the New York State Dance Education Association, the New York State Media Arts Teachers Association, the New York State School Music Association, the New York State Theatre Education Association and the New York State Art Teachers Association, in addition to nationally recognized experts in the field of arts assessment.
