Fredonia faculty members Alberto Rey and Dr. Jessica Hillman-McCord will be among the featured presenters at the Buffalo Humanities Festival on Sept. 26 and 27. The inaugural event, with the theme, “Migration Nation: Moving Stories,” will investigate the human dimension of migration in a series of talks, discussions and performances.
Rey, a SUNY Distinguished Professor in the Department of Visual Arts and New Media, will speak on “The Cuban-American Experience through Art,” on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 12:30 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center Auditorium. At 2 p.m. the same day, Hillman-McCord, an associate professor of theatre and dance, will present, “The Jewish immigrant on Broadway,” in Ketchum Hall Room 111 at SUNY Buffalo State.
Day passes will be available to attend talks, conversations and roundtables, led by faculty from area universities and other experts, on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Burchfield Penney and Rockwell Hall at SUNY Buffalo State. Outdoor events such as an interactive conversation station, a cultural fair and performances by musicians and dancers will be held on the SUNY Buffalo State campus and are free and open to the public.
Gary Shteyngart, author of the New York Times’ best-selling memoir, “Little Failure,” will open the festival as its keynote speaker on Friday, Sept. 26 at 8 p.m. with a reading, on-stage interview and book signing at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. The author of three books, Shteyngart uses razor-sharp dark humor to explore the contemporary immigrant experience.
Fredonia is a co-sponsor of the festival, organized by the University at Buffalo Humanities Institute. Other festival partners include SUNY Buffalo State, Canisius College, Niagara University, Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the Burchfield Penney Art Center.
