Video, social media campaign part of nationwide effort focused on international population
Fredonia has released a new video on its website and social media platforms to emphasize the university's acceptance of and enthusiasm for international students. The video, entitled “You Are Welcome Here,” is part of a nationwide effort among higher education institutions to reach out to international students uneasy about studying in the United States.
“Like many universities across the country, Fredonia’s admissions counselors have been hearing concerns from international students regarding the climate in the U.S.” said Naomi Baldwin, director of the Office of International Education. “This production is meant to show those students that, indeed, we are a warm, friendly, progressive, and welcoming campus.”
“Our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic plan is clear,” said Fredonia President Virginia Horvath. “Fredonia is committed to fostering a diverse community of outstanding faculty, staff, and students. We include all identities, experiences, and backgrounds. We want international students to want to attend here to know we value their contributions to Fredonia.”
Almost 150 international, visiting, and exchange students are enrolled at Fredonia for the Spring 2017 semester, representing 15 countries around the world.
The video, which features greetings and comments from Fredonia administrators, faculty, and students, celebrates Fredonia’s commitment to a diverse student population. It also communicates the principles of equity, inclusiveness, and access promoted by Fredonia’s student body, personnel, and curriculum. Fredonia is joining other universities using the hashtag #YouAreWelcomeHere on its social media platforms.
The “You Are Welcome Here” movement began last fall, and has spread to universities across the country.
