Fredonia has redesigned its scholarship model to increase overall affordability for students and families, which will be implemented with new freshman and transfer students entering for Fall 2016.
To combat the ever-rising costs of higher education, Fredonia is committed to assisting students and families in need of increased financial aid now more than ever. Awarding additional institutional scholarship dollars to students who display the potential to succeed academically will allow more students access to a high-quality education.
“When considering students for scholarships, we aren’t just focusing on standardized tests and averages,” explained Director of Admissions Cory Bezek. “A student is so much more than that. We are recognizing those students who show potential -- not just academically, but as leaders and contributing members of our community at large.”
As a result of its redesign efforts, this year Fredonia will offer over $5 million in merit scholarships as well as need-based aid, nearly doubling the amount it offered in 2014.
“Cost and affordability are critical factors driving the college-going decision,” added Associate Vice President for Enrollment Services Daniel Tramuta. “These are renewable scholarships that continue throughout a student's four years of study.”
The merit-based scholarships are designed to be renewable every year, provided that a student maintains at least a 2.8 grade point average. This will also allow students and their families to calculate a more accurate total cost estimate over a typical four-year bachelor’s degree path.
Many of Fredonia’s scholarships also allow students to get involved in service and learning activities, in addition to funding their education. This helps these students get involved on campus from the outset, which has been shown to increase their overall academic success and graduation rates as a result.
