The Association for Computing Machinery’s (ACM) Northeast Preliminary International Collegiate Programming Contest was held at SUNY Fredonia on Saturday, Oct. 17.

A team from SUNY Fredonia placed third among 11 three-member teams competing from the University of Rochester, Rochester of Institute of Technology, SUNY Brockport, SUNY Fredonia, Hobart College and Canisius College. (All but the University of Rochester has two three-member teams represented in the competition.)  SUNY Fredonia’s winning team included Joseph Spina, Julich Merich and Christopher Becker.

Dr. Ziya Arnavut, Professor of Computer and Information Sciences at SUNY Fredonia, conducted the event. Out of a possible total of nine problems which teams were given up to five hours to solve, the University of Rochester’s team solved six problems, good enough for a first place in the event. Second place was RIT's team, which solved five problems, while teams from Fredonia and Hobart solved two problems each, with Fredonia earning the third-place ranking because they solved their problems more quickly than Hobart.

This year’s regional competitions drew tens of thousands of students from universities in approximately 90 countries on six continents for an all-out “battle of the brains.” One hundred regional champions will meet when the contest culminates February 1-6, 2010 in Harbin, China. The best and brightest information technology students from around the globe will compete for awards, scholarships, prizes and bragging rights to the "World’s Smartest Trophy."
