In preparation for Freedonia Marxonia, to be held Oct. 1 and 2, community members and Fredonia students are invited to participate in the Freedonia Marxonia art contest.

Freedonia Marxonia commemorates the connection between Fredonia and "Freedonia," the setting of the 1933 Marx Brothers movie, “Duck Soup.” Using any medium (including items found around the house or in nature), creative renditions of one or more of the Marx Brothers are welcome. The Marx Brothers (Groucho, Harpo, Chico, Zeppo and Gummo) were comedic stars of vaudeville, Broadway, film, radio, and television in the 20th century. Art work can be realistic, stylized, caricatures, etc. It can be drawn, painted, sculpted, constructed, and formed in any original way.

All entries will be displayed as part of the Freedonia Marxonia exhibit in Reed Library at Fredonia, which will open Thursday, Oct. 1 at 3 p.m. and will run until Oct. 25. Entries will also be eligible for cash prizes: $75 first prize, $50 second prize and a $25 third prize.

All ages and skill levels are welcome to participate. The art contest is intended as a fun activity to increase awareness about the Marx Brothers and their role in a piece of local history. Additional activities on Oct. 1 and 2 will include screenings of “Duck Soup,” at the university, and the film, “A Night at the Opera” at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House (with support from the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation).

Art contest entries are due by Sept. 25 and should be submitted to Cindy Yochym in Reed Library. For questions, please contact Ms. Yochym at Cynthia.Yochym@fredonia.edu.

Freedonia Marxonia is supported through the Hahn Family Freedonia Marxonia Fund at the Fredonia College Foundation.
