Fredonia freshman Kristen Sawyer (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) set a school women's indoor pole vault record Friday, Dec. 5, at the Kent State Golden Flash Gala.

Competing in her first collegiate meet, Sawyer cleared 3.46 meters -- 11 feet, 4 1/4 inches -- to eclipse the previous school record of 10 feet, 8 inches set by Chelsea Caruso in 2011. Sawyer finish tied for second in the unseeded division of the meet -- and was the top collegian in the group. Another Fredonia freshman, Julia Schreier (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint), cleared 3.16 meters, which converts to 10 feet, 4 1/4 inches.

Fredonia's other Friday highlights included sophomore Alyssa Stroud (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) running an 18:32.87 in the 5,000 meters, a personal-best of nearly 1 1/2 minutes. Also, senior Jenna Fiacco (Verona, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) had a personal-best measurement of 13.97 meters, or 45 feet, 10 inches, in the 20-pound weight throw.

Top Performances Saturday by the Blue Devils included a second-place finish by Laura Morrison (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) in the 800 meters with a time of 2:20.88. Also, Lauren Kotas (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) was the fastest of four Blue Devils in the 3,000 meters. She finished third in 10:40.92. Nicole Desens (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Arlington) finished eighth in the shot put with a toss of 12.69 meters, or 41 feet, 7 3/4 inches.
