The Italian film, “Golden Door,” will launch the 2014-2015 Convocation film series with the theme, “Voyages of Discovery: Finding Family and Self in Film,” with a screening on Monday, Oct. 13, at 8 p.m., in Fenton Hall Room 105.
“Golden Door” depicts the journey of an Italian immigrant family from Sicily to the U.S. at the beginning of the 20th century. The father, two sons and a grandmother leave their homeland in search of greater opportunities and a better life in America. Like immigrants from other countries, what they encountered was a journey full of unknowns and difficulties. An open discussion will follow the screening that is free and open to the public.
The 2006 film was directed and written by Emmanuele Crialese, who earned a degree in filmmaking from New York University in 1995. “Golden Door” won six awards at its premiere at the Venice Film Festival and was Italy’s submission to the 79th Academy Awards.
Films selected for the "Voyages of Discoveries" series highlight the universality of change and discovery, even as they show very poignantly differences in culture and location. The juxtapositions allow for rich conversations about both the universal and particular aspects of discovering self.
The Convocation film series was organized by Dr. Chiara De Santi of the Department of World Languages and Cultures, and Dr. KimMarie Cole of the Department of English, on behalf of the cross-cultural Renga. The two remaining films in the series, “From Up on Poppy Hill” and “Wadjda,” will be presented during the spring semester.
The movie is free and the public is invited to attend.
