Forty SUNY Fredonia students are being offered the once-in-a-lifetime chance to compete in a special Guitar Hero competition in front of a celebrity judging panel that includes Vicarious Visions Chief Executive Officer Karthik Bala.
The event -- FREDONIA HERO -- will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14 -- the eve of the annual Convocation address, which Mr. Bala will give the following day at 3 p.m.
Students will form four-person "bands" and select one song, in advance, from the 80+ available in Guitar Hero 5 (xbox 360 format). Only 10 bands can enter (first registered, first served, although a waiting list will be kept in case of cancellations). The band will then perform that song live in front of a campus audience and the celebrity panel in the Dods Hall Multipurpose Room. (One song per band; no two bands will perform the same track.) The judges will rank each band based on the score they achieve in the game itself, the difficulty level selected, and the categories of appearance, creativity and showmanship.
Joining Mr. Bala as celebrity judges are School of Music Distinguished Professor of Guitar Jim Piorkowski, and SUNY Fredonia President Dennis Hefner. Communications Professor and well-known campus rock aficionado Ann Carden will serve as the evening's M.C.
Prizes will be given to the top three acts and include various Vicarious Visions game titles, SUNY Fredonia sweatshirts and other items, and much more. The grand prize includes a complete Band Hero kit!
There is no cost to enter as a participant or to come and cheer on your friends as audience members. To learn more and see the songs available, visit www.fredonia.edu/convocation/guitarhero/.
