Campus and community members are invited to watch the New York gubernatorial debate live on "the big screen" on Monday, Oct. 18, starting at 7 p.m. in 202 McEwen Hall on the SUNY Fredonia campus. Seven different party candidates, including Andrew Cuomo and Carl Paladino, will debate at Hofstra University in a live, statewide broadcast.

Student groups including College Democrats and the Conservative and Republican Society will lead a post-debate debate on the issues raised, along with other related concerns in this important election for New York State. Campus and community members are encouraged to bring their own views, issues and concerns and to participate in the post-debate discussion.

David Rankin, chair of the Political Science department, has co-organized several Presidential Debate Watch events in recent elections and welcomes the opportunity to bring a similar experience to this year’s non-presidential election.

"We have had incredible turnout and post-debate discussion for the presidential debates," Dr. Rankin said. "This gubernatorial debate is an opportunity to watch and discuss the issues and concerns even more directly connected to our region and our state. It’s great to see our students getting more involved in this midterm election and engaging in related discussion. We hope that numerous campus and community perspectives are represented as part of this debate."

Gubernatorial Debate Watch 2010 is co-sponsored by the Political Science Association, the College Democrats, the Conservative and Republican Society, the Department of Political Science, and the American Democracy Project.
