Members of the Health Professions Club at will again function as “sighted guides” for Dining in the Dark, an annual event held by CBA Vision Rehabilitation Services (AKA Chautauqua Blind Association) to raise money and increase community awareness of the myriad challenges — both big and small — that visually impaired people face in their everyday lives.
The event will be held Friday, April 21, at 6 p.m. at the Chautauqua Suites in Mayville.
Guests of “Dining in the Dark” will be immersed in a unique dining experience by eating dinner blind-folded. The student volunteers will prepare for the event by blindfolding each other and simulating the perceptions of the attendees. Volunteers will learn how to hold guest’s arms, to seat them and to instruct where their meal is on the plate.
The first-ever Louise Tefft Award will be presented to the JCC Occupational Therapy Assistant Program and the Fredonia Health Professions Club. Louise was a client of CBA for 28 years and supported the group through donations and speaking engagements, and credited the services she received for her ability to remain by herself in her own home up until she passed away last year at 101 years old.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Vision Screening Program which is operated by Chautauqua Blind Association throughout the county. CBA is dedicated to assisting visually impaired people be active members of their community. For more information on the event, contact the association at 716-664-6660 or visit the website.
