The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) on Dec. 8 named two Fredonia men as the top swimmers and divers from the past week. It was a repeat selection for each.
Freshman freestyle-butterfly specialist Jake Hewitt (Duansburg, N.Y./Schalmont) was named SUNYAC Male Swimmer of the Week. Sophomore diver Jeff Matter (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) claimed the SUNYAC Male Diver of the Week award.
Both men competed in the Fredonia Blue Devil Invitational held Friday through Sunday at the Steele Hall Natatorium. Hewitt competed in eight events over three days -- four individual events and four relays. His top performance was winning the 200-yard butterfly with both a school and pool record time of 1:56.36. The previous school mark of 1:56.75 was set in 2006 by Noor El-Tahawy. The pool record was held by a swimmer from St. Vincent College. Matter, meanwhile, won 1-meter springboard diving with a score of 505.85 points. He also finished second in 3-meter diving with a score of 468.05 points. Both totals are NCAA provisional qualifying scores for 11 dives.
Hewitt was named SUNYAC Swimmer of the Meet once before this season -- on Nov. 3. For Matter, Monday's award was his third this season; he was previously named the conference's top male diver on Oct. 27 and again on Nov. 3.
