Fredonia, N.Y. — October 14, 2008 — SUNY Fredonia faculty members will be hosting “The String Experience,” a workshop for players of string instruments such as violin, viola, cello and bass.

The seminar is intended for high-school-aged students who play string instruments. Young musicians are invited to improve their practice and performance techniques, interact with other string players, and attend a recital by the SUNY Fredonia School of Music faculty.

The two-day event will be held October 25 and 26, beginning at 9 a.m. A limited number of dorms are available for students attending both days who are planning to stay on campus overnight. They will be assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration forms and fee information are online and can be printed.

The String Experience exemplifies the unique one-on-one experience that is fostered between students and teachers at SUNY Fredonia. Players will have the opportunity to work in small sessions with conservatory-trained faculty, developing performance skills, working on stage fright and audition processes, and improving technical skills including intonation and tone production.

The event will include improvisation sessions with Dr. David Rudge, SUNY Fredonia director of orchestras and operas. The sessions will focus on ways to liberate instruments and exploring new possibilities. Students who have never improvised and those who have had previous improvisation experience are encouraged to attend.

Joining The String Experience will be Stephen Doane, cello professor at the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester, who will be performing string chamber music featuring the Schubert Cello Quintet, along with SUNY Fredonia faculty at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Also in attendance will be Glen Dicterow, violinist and concertmaster for the New York Philharmonic, who will be playing with the Western New York Chamber Orchestra at 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The String Experience is designed to be a fun and supportive atmosphere for students, but parents and teachers are also encouraged to attend. For more information and to see a complete list of events, visit https://www.fredonia.edu/music
