Hockey team in pink jerseys

Weeks of anticipation, excitement and publicity catapulted into a story of national importance for the SUNY Fredonia men's hockey team. Its "Pink the Rink" game garnered coverage by the Associated Press, which ultimately resulted in stories appearing coast-to-coast, including such national media mainstays as The New York Times, The Washington Post and Yahoo — culminating with a highlight which appeared numerous times on ESPN’s SportsCenter telecasts Friday evening and Saturday morning. After it was all said and done, the Blue Devils delivered an impressive 8-2 win over rival Cortland State, raised thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society, and helped extend the SUNY Fredonia name in a way it’s never been seen, all over the world.

For the second year in a row, the Fredonia State hockey team (above with coaches Jeff Meredith, left, and Greg Heffernan, right) and the SUNY Fredonia Sports Management students teamed up for the fight against breast cancer.

Fredonia State equalled its best offensive game of the season Friday before an overflow crowd on hand for Pink the Rink '08 at the Steele Hall Ice Arena.  Junior forward Bryan Goudy (Port Huron. Mich.) netted three goals -- all in the second period -- in an 8-2 SUNYAC win over the Cortland Red Dragons.

“I am so pleased that everyone is so excited about this event,” assistant coach and Sports Management professor Heffernan said. “Coach Meredith and I decided to have special commemorative pink jerseys to be worn by the Fredonia players during the game that night.”

Several of the jerseys worn by the players were silent auctioned starting February 1 via e-mail as well as at the game itself.

Last year Pink the Rink raised nearly $1,200 for the American Cancer Society. This year and organizers have set a goal to exceed that amount. Students and fans are not only encouraged to donate but also asked to wear pink to the game for a "Pink out."

“Breast cancer is a disease that touches us all," Heffernan said. "Wear pink on the 8th and support the fight against cancer."
