Andrea Zevenbergen |
On Wednesday, March 9, the second Social Science Colloquium of the Spring Semester will be given by Andrea Zevenbergen, associate professor of psychology. Her presentation is titled, “Mothers' Beliefs Regarding Parent-Child Narratives: A Cross-Cultural Analysis." The event will take place at noon in E122 Thompson Hall. It is free and open to the public. Pizza and beverages will be provided.
Dr. Zevenbergen will discuss a research study she did that examines the differences between middle-class mothers in America and those in Poland when it comes to telling stories to their pre-school children. The mothers she studied differed in that the American mothers more strongly endorsed the use of stories to help their children remember important people in their lives while Polish mothers were ore often likely to relate stories in order to provide explanations, provide emotional support, and to connect present events with past events.
Along with sharing findings from the “Mothers' Beliefs Regarding Parent-Child Narratives” study, Dr. Zevenbergen will discuss cross-cultural research collaborations in a more general context.
"Most of my research falls into the broad area of parent-child interactions," Dr. Zevenbergen said. "For example, I study parental educational interactions with preschoolers and effective parental discipline behaviors. I enjoy collaborating with students on research; together, we plan studies, collect and analyze data, and prepare presentations based on the research findings."
The presentation is sponsored by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
